Did you know how the term "Freelancing" was coined?
In medieval Europe, "Free-Lancer" was used to refer to mercenaries who offered their services and loyalty during wars in exchange for money. Relatable, isn't it?
To the point, Like everything else, freelancing comes with its pros and cons. I am a Freelance Coach but I still say that Freelancing might not be for everybody. How do you know if it is a good career option for you?
Let's find out… answer these questions and yes, please be honest with yourself!
1. Are you Self -Motivated?
If it’s a hmm or maybe, then you are not!
A freelancer needs to be self-motivated and a self-starter. You will be working for yourself without a boss, to drive you or make you work. Freelancers who miss self-motivation and do not have big dreams can at most be a mediocre.
2. Are you Sure?
If you are just thinking of ditching your boss,” “freedom” and “Workcation”. Here is the bummer
- No paid leaves, no sick leaves either.
- No insurance, no medical or retirement plans.
- No help from colleagues and no yearly bonus.
Trust me, I know what you are feeling but...when you are your own boss, you also are your own slave.
Are you sure about freelancing now?
You better be. As a freelancer, quick decision-making and decidedness are really important.
3. Can you manage your time well?
How good are you with time? As a freelancer, you are in total control of your time but yeah “with great power comes great responsibilities” 😉
Of course, there are tools to check your time but if you lacking this skill in general, you need to be extra careful.
4. Can you multi-task?
A day in a life of a freelancer is full of contrasts, while you might start with prospecting, calling, and negotiating, by lunch you might be invoicing a client, following up with someone for feedback, networking with other freelancers by evening, troubleshoot some technical error and make those “revisions” from yesterday and learning something new urgently before being exhausted by the night.
Yes, it does require some serious multi-tasking.
5. Can you adapt?
How adaptive are you? In a long run, you will need to work with different clients, different tools, and different technologies and yes, they are evolving quickly. You will need to be at the top of your game.
6. Can you do it all by yourself?
Entrepreneurship is a lonely journey and so is freelancing. Well, it’s not all that bad though, no boss, no office politics. But it also takes a lot to be and work all by yourself.
Are you up for it?
7. Can you communicate?
Here is the other thing. Communication is not just how you speak and listen. Are you able to understand someone when you listen to them? Can you make someone else understand exactly what you are trying to convey?
You will need these skills when you prospect, sell and negotiate. Later again, when you do their job and get results for them. Also when, you are networking with other freelancers (which is a must btw, more on that later). So basically, every day!
8. Do you have the ability to take risks?
Even jobs are not safe. A lot of people lost their jobs and many are still at the risk of losing it. With Freelancing comes the risk and uncertainty as well.
Are you up for it? Can you still be calm if you don’t get regular clients for 2 months?
9. Are you an expert at something?
Do you wonder why a lot of big companies hire freelancers and not employees? Even when freelancers are way more expensive and cannot be treated as employees? Because freelancers are supposed to be experts at their jobs and are expected to get results.
Are you an expert at anything? if not, you must start working towards it.
Answer these questions and know for yourself if this is the career for you. As long as you have positive answers to all these questions and a positive attitude, you are not likely to regret it. Most of the skills I mentioned can be learned just like all other skills. If you are still reading, I am sure you must be wondering about
- ‘What are the skills required?’
- ‘What do freelancers earn?’
- ‘How to decide a niche?’
- 'How to get your first client' etc
I will be more than happy to answer them for you.
